LOWA PRO Team Hans Kammerlander

Heading into the heights with LOWA

Hans Kammerlander has been a member of the alpine elite for years now. The officially certified mountain and ski guide has stood at the pinnacle of 13 of the world’s eight-thousanders, including seven that he conquered along with Reinhold Messner. His exceptional performances have made him a unique athlete in the world of mountaineering.

These performances include the first ascent of two eight-thousanders (Hidden Peak at 8,068 metres and Gasherbrum II at 8,035 metres) in 1984 and the first ski downhill run from the world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest (8,850 metres), in 1996. In January 2012, Hans also successfully completed a years-long project: By climbing the 4,852-metre-high Mount Tyree in the Antarctic on 17 January 2012, he became the first person to scale all seven second summits on the world’s seven continents and wrote alpine history in the process.

Each year, Hans presents slide shows across Europe and has made a name for himself as a writer. One of his biggest projects is the film that he co-produced, “Manaslu – Der Berg der Seelen” (Manaslu – the Mountain of the Souls). The film celebrated its premiere at the end of 2018. It gives viewers special insights into the mountaineer’s adventures and into Hans Kammerlander as a human being.

Hans Kammerlander,
How has the sport changed your life?

“The sport has expanded my horizons. Through it, I continuously set new goals, and that is important.”

What do you always take along with you on your expeditions? What could you never do without?

“I always take along the Tibetan Dzi bead that Reinhold Messner gave me after our first expedition together. I usually pack a little Southern Tyrolean flat bread and bacon as well.”

How would you describe your perfect day?

“Leisurely driving in the Dolomites in my VW Beetle, date of registration 06/12/1956 (my birthday), doing a little climbing there and then heading back home in this great car.”

What one-day tour would you recommend and why?

“A circular tour around the Three Peaks of Lavaredo in the Dolomites that offers a breathtaking view of the mountains. A hike there is always an experience. If you really want to enjoy the trip, you should go after the season ends, times like the end of September or beginning of October. It’s unbelievably quiet then, and you can enjoy the day to its fullest.”
